Clear and present danger, Part 2

March 17, 2018

Last night, retired four star General, Barry McCaffrey tweeted, “Reluctantly I have concluded that President Trump is a serious threat to U.S. national security. He is refusing to protect vital U.S. interests from active Russian attacks. It is apparent that he is for some unknown reason under the sway of Mr. Putin.” (@mccaffrey3, Twitter.com, 3/16/18).After the events of the last week, the truth of General McCaffrey’s tweet is alarmingly evident. Trump has reacted to Russia’s brazen chemical weapon assassination attempt in the U.K. by punishing those in his administration who dared to condemn these reckless acts. Trump followed up his ignominious firing of Tillerson by tweet, by ratcheting up the rumors of McMaster’s imminent departure. The McMaster rumors accelerated less than 24 hours after he excoriated Russia for its role enabling the murderous Assad regime and its flagrant disregard for the sovereignty of other nations, including ours (Source: “H.R. McMaster Gives the Kremlin A Double Bird Salute,” by Spencer Ackerman, TheDailyBeast.com, 3/16/18).

Trump’s reality show antics are a desperate attempt to obscure the harsh reality, not only of Russia’s increasingly blatant assaults on Western democracies, but also of the widening scope of the Special Counsel’s inquiry. While we don’t know what Mueller’s subpoena of Trump organization business records will reveal, it is clear that the information we have so far points to money laundering and influence peddling, in addition to obstruction of justice and conspiring with Russia to secure his election. It may be penetrating the thick skulls of Trump and his henchmen that they may be frog marched out of The White House in handcuffs, making them even more vindictive and petty than usual. What other explanation can there be for the Friday night firing of former FBI Deputy Director, Andrew McCabe, two days shy of his retirement date on Sunday, jeopardizing his pension? The irony of serial perjurer and committed racist Jeff Sessions firing McCabe for “lack of candor” in his interviews with internal investigators is rich indeed. McCabe wasted no time in clapping back at the administration in a fiery statement. He declared that the Office of the Inspector General’s focus on him was “part of an unprecedented effort by the Administration, driven by the President himself, to remove me from my position, destroy my reputation, and possibly strip me of a pension that I worked 21 years to earn….This attack…is…part of a larger effort …to taint the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation, which continue to this day,” (Source: “Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe’s Fiery Statement about Sessions’ decision to fire him,” by Matty Yglesias (quoting McCabe statement), Vox.com, 3/16/18).

True to form, Trump is responding to his heightened personal danger by lashing out in increasingly bizarre ways, having McCabe fired and suing Stormy Daniels for $20 million dollars, the welfare of the country be damned. This in a week where we confronted not one, but two Russian assassination attempts on foreign soil, and learned that Russian hackers had infiltrated U.S. power plants, gaining the ability to sabotage or shut them down (Source: “Cyber Attacks Put Russian Fingers on the switch at Power Plants, U.S. Says,” by Nicole Perlroth and David E. Sanger, The New York Times, 3/15/18).

It could not be clearer that General McCaffrey stated a simple truth—Trump and everyone in his administration, from top to bottom, is a racist, corrupt, authoritarian and represents a clear and present danger to these United States. Any member of Congress who is not using the full weight of their Constitutional power to drive these treasonous criminals from office is an accomplice, not a patriot. Come November, vote accordingly.
